unusual sighting

Big storm clouds hovering over the sea. How hard is it raining out there? But wait, what is that thin vertical spiral I see slowly moving across the horizon, hanging down from the clouds? Could this be my first tornado sighting? (Just click on the image and tell me its not!)

  1. Ciao! What a picture! It's a waterspout, which is like a tornado on the water. I used to see them occasionally growing up on the east coast of Florida.

  2. Sure looks like a waterspout to me! From what town is it taken?

  3. Thanks Laura and Peter for the proper terminology -- water spout! This photo was taken from where I live in Aci Castello.

  4. How beautiful and thrilling, though it must have been a little scary at first not knowing it was a waterspout - I wouldn't have known either. Magical weather ... xo, j.

  8. This weather is wild isn't it!! After alost 5 years I've never seen it rain so hard this early into fall. Great for my garden... horrible for muddy puppy paws.

    Great picture!!

  9. Are waterspouts the same as tornadoes over land? Beautiful, but still scary, I think.
